POSITION AVAILABLE: Engagement & Development Manager – Position located in Chicago, IL

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Do you want to work at the intersection of politics, citizen activism, and fundraising? Are you interested in a rapidly expanding organization that is changing the way people think and talk about democracy?

We seek an experienced development professional to help us expand our political and organizational footprint. The ideal candidate will have a background in fundraising as well as politics, democracy reform, or both. He or she will be responsible for creating and executing a plan to drive annual operating and issue campaign fundraising. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Engagement and Development Manager is responsible for creating and executing a plan that includes but is not limited to organizing an annual gala, securing new sources of funding from major donors, generating innovative strategies, timelines, and clear goals for moving current donors and prospective through the development engagement cycle, and communicating the value of work to our base. The positions specific responsibilities are broken into the following categories and responsibilities. 

Fundraising

  • Expand annual giving program by identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donors.
  • Strengthen our development committee to strengthen fundraising operations.
  • Increase our membership base of small donors through coordinating membership activities such as action alerts, membership drives, and membership events.
  • Plan, organizing and implement CCIL’s annual “Champions of Democracy” celebration in cooperation with committee members and volunteers.
  • Process donations and preparing gift acknowledgements in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a database(s) for grants, donors, and members and process donations.
  • Lead foundation research, cultivation as well as assist in the writing and submission of grant proposals.
  • Participate as a member of the national development team. 

Strategic Engagement

  • In coordination with the Executive Director, develop and deliver the organization’s vision and strategy (fundraising, marketing, communications, leadership development, membership recruitment, etc.) to build upon existing opportunities and strengths.
  • Support the Executive Director in board development and recruitment of leaders to support the organization’s fundraising and programs.
  • Support the Executive Director and Illinois Board of Directors in developing of organizational goals, issue priorities, program strategies, development and marketing plans and all other facets of our strategic planning process.
  • Innovate and implement new approaches for strategic growth for our organization. 

Communications

  • Develop and implement communications and branding strategies.
  • In collaboration with program staff, create and send on-going communications to key stakeholders through our advocacy alerts, online fundraising appeals, and direct mail program.
  • Develop and implement a media strategy with program staff that increases the overall profile of the organization (earned and social media).
  • In coordination with the Lead Organizer, maintain the CCIL website and microsites to best market our organization and engage our stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the creation of support materials to demonstrate the work of our organization to different stakeholders (membership brochure, annual report, event materials, etc.)

Programmatic Coordination

  • In collaboration with the Lead Organizer, develop systems for membership recruitment and leadership development that increases organizing, activism and fundraising for our membership and our Common Cause Illinois chapters throughout the state.
  • In collaboration with Political Director, coordinate lobbying, coalition building and policy activities that build upon the organization’s innovative and strategic growth opportunities.
  • Engage with all aspects of the organization to enhance the democracy and social justice statewide vision and strategy

 QUALIFICATIONS: 

The ideal candidate will possess the following abilities:

  • Proven track record as an individual major-gifts fundraiser (for gifts of $1,000+);
  • A minimum of 5-6 years working in progressively responsible positions for a non-profit, advocacy or political organization or campaign;
  • Superb communications skills – verbal and written;
  • Engaging and eager to work with leaders and staff, able to build and cultivate relationships with a broad range of activists, leaders, and community contacts;
  • Comfortable working with top-level business, philanthropic, and civic leaders;
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines;
  • Eager to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and goal-driven environment;
  • Outgoing and positive attitude;
  • Experience managing fundraising events;
  • A strong commitment to Common Cause mission, especially our nonpartisan approach to helping citizens participate in democracy and hold power accountable.
  • Ability to clearly communicate Common Cause positions on policy matters.
  • Exceptionally talented career changers with clearly transferable skills will be considered.

COMPENSATION:  Starting salary range between 60k – 70k plus generous benefits package.
